WASHINGTON D.C. The following statement may be attributed to the Nuclear Innovation Alliance Executive Director Judi Greenwald regarding the announcement of the USA, France, UK and 17 other nations intention to triple nuclear energy capacity globally by 2050.

"The NIA is a non-profit “think-and-do” tank working to enable advanced nuclear power as a global solution to mitigate climate change. Given our work on advanced nuclear, we welcome this weekend’s announcement of a new global goal of tripling nuclear energy capacity by 2050. This goal is broader and even more ambitious than our previous call for a doubling of nuclear energy in the U.S. by 2050 as outlined in our Fission Vision report published in April of 2022. NIA’s Fission Vision says the US needs to meet three major objectives to enable nuclear energy to play a role in transitioning the country to 100% clean energy by 2050:

  • Catalyzing a robust U.S. innovation and commercialization ecosystem

  • Ensuring “social license” to operate advanced nuclear energy

  • Re-imagining and integrating advanced nuclear energy with other clean energy sources

"These objectives are even more important given the new goal. We welcome this broad support for advanced nuclear development and look forward to working with policymakers, regulators, non-governmental organizations and industry to ensure we meet it. The challenge will be building on the momentum created with this announcement to address the real barriers to continued development and deployment of advanced nuclear energy not just in the U.S., but around the world.

"The U.S., a co-leader of this goal, also invited international financial institutions to encourage the inclusion of nuclear energy in energy lending. This financial initiative aligns with NIA’s efforts to lower investment barriers to advanced nuclear energy, which include engaging with the finance and investment community and publishing resources for both communities. The NIA is working diligently to educate potential investors on advanced nuclear energy to get one step closer to this goal to triple nuclear energy generation.

"We look forward to the ongoing partnership between the 20 countries that committed to this goal and what that means for the future of nuclear energy."
